The Fifth & Fifthteenth by Kent Poon

The Fifth & Fifthteenth (DSFS-001CD feverSound.com)

Recently, I bumped into an old audiophile friend that was well known here, Joseph Ki at the listening session of Andrew Lee’s audio set up (for ‘Open Door’ at analoguefellowship.com). He slipped a CD to me and it’s titled,”The Fifth & Fifthteenth” (a compilation) which was produced and sound engineered by Kent Poon.
I gave it a listen and immediately I got hooked with a number of tracks, “Loving You”(Benyapa Sukeenu), “You’ve Got A Friend”(Marcia Seebaran), “Where are you my Angel”(Silian Wong) and other Cantonese songs. I found the order of the selected tracks to be entertaining and mindful of the listener’s emotional amplitude. It was neat to have ‘Street Sound’ of different part of busy Hong Kong in between different tracks.
I believed that Kent Poon has done a marvelous job in the arrangement of the tracks for that CD, and an even better job(!) in capturing the ’emotional essence’ and musicality for each song/track. I thought to myself that he must have taken good effort not to exaggerate detail, but instead spent his effort to understand and memorize the gist and strength of each performer for each track.
Thus, I found the end result to be natural, airy and atmospheric but without the exaggerated high frequencies. As a digital source material, it sounded like a good analogue vinyl.
Highly recommended even for an analogue maven!
